New Scorecard Shows American Automakers Driving U.S. Economy

Washington, D.C. – American Automakers Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Stellantis are key drivers for the U.S. economy, according to a new scorecard from The American Automotive Policy Council. With its “2021 Scorecard: Auto Production and Sales,” AAPC provides new data showing automakers’ collective impact on our economy and the extraordinary contribution American Automakers make through their research labs, factories, dealerships and other facilities across the United States

“American Automakers Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, and their manufacturing supply chains continue to be essential to growth in the American economy,” said Governor Matt Blunt, president of AAPC, the trade association representing American Automakers Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Stellantis.  “The most recent data illustrates the reach of the U.S. auto sector and shows that every state is, in fact, an auto state.  This is why it is so important for policymakers to support policies that address semiconductor shortages, promote strong trade relations and support other initiatives that are critical for American Automakers.”

Among the study’s findings on the scale of American Automakers and their impact on the U.S. economy:

Production and Sales

  • American Automakers are just 3 of 14 major OEMs selling vehicles in the U.S assembled 8.8 million of the 14.6 million vehicles purchased in the U.S. last year.

  • Together, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis operate 47 plants and employ 390,000 workers. Their U.S. manufacturing supply chain includes 5,600 producers employing more than 871,000 U.S. workers.

  • To match the American Automakers’ U.S. production rate (U.S. production divided by U.S. sales), foreign automakers would have to assemble an additional 1.8 million cars and trucks in the U.S. each year. To do so, they would have to build six new assembly plants.
