Green cars are getting bigger and are equipped with premium technology and features previously seen only in higher-end vehicles.

A host of cars with small-displacement gas engines — along with hybrids and electric vehicles — were introduced last week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Green Car of the Year, the show's top award, went to the Ford Fusion.

The Fusion is a mainstream, midsize car offered with hybrid and plug-in powertrain options and all the premium bells and whistles offered on top-of-the-line cars. The Fusion plug-in hybrid gets 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway.

The days when fuel efficiency was the sole domain of spartan little cars are gone.
