The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency as getting the equivalent of 108 m.p.g. in city driving and 92 on the highway for a combined rating of 100.

The Dearborn-based automaker claims the Fusion Energi's mileage beats the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid by the equivalent of 5 m.p.g. in city driving.

Ford anticipates selling more than 19,000 of its hybrid and plug-in vehicles in the fourth quarter. That would be Ford's best quarter for hybrids to date, beating the previous record by more than 50%.

A group of consumers in California sued, alleging that Ford's advertising is misleading because some hybrids have not been getting EPA mileage in real-world driving. The EPA also is reviewing the 47 m.p.g. claims on the C-Max and Fusion hybrids.
