General Motors says it will invest $148 million in repurposing equipment at its Spring Hill plant, a move that will retain about 200 jobs.

The investment will allow the Spring Hill facility to build V8 engines for trucks and SUVs. Production will begin by the end of the year.

“This investment will position GM and its workforce to promptly respond to consumer demand for this engine in the popular truck and SUV segment,” said Arvin Jones, GM North America manufacturing manager. “The flexibility of Spring Hill’s engine machining and assembly equipment is allowing GM to respond deftly when additional engine variant capacity is needed.”

Spurred by dropping oil prices, sales for SUVs and crossover vehicles have climbed throughout the industry. GM reported a 144 percent increase in SUVs in 2015.

GM has announced more than $1.35 billion in Spring Hill investments since 2010, according to the company.
